We are delighted to offer a range of British Sign Language courses here at Deaf Connections.

Anyone with a keen interest in learning Deaf Awareness or BSL can apply. All 3 courses are currently underway and the next semester will start around Spring time 2012, we are accepting applications for these courses.

  • Taught over 10 week period - 1 Class per week.
  • The course is suitable for beginners with an interest in British Sign Language. It addresses issues of Deaf Awareness and will give a basic insight into the syntax of BSL.
  • Course content can be tailored to work place environments and the BSL taught will be work related

  • 40 hour course over 20 weeks - 2 hour class each week
  • On completion of this module&exam the candidate will be able hold a basic conversation with a user of BSL.
  • The candidate will learn a number of topics in the language including:- alphabet, numbers, family members, hobbies, sports, occupations etc.

  • 40 hour course over 20 weeks - 2 hour class each week
  • It is advised that the candidate will have completed the Introduction to BSL before enrolling on this course although this is not essential.
  • This module will involve personal, social and formal topics. The candidate will gain a broader vocabulary enabling them to hold a BSL conversation confidently.

Practice Service
With the SQA courses we offer a practice service where students will be able to have 1 to 1 online BSL tutorials with their tutor at home, via webcam using our Sign On Screen facility. Each student will be allocated a time-slot when their practice session will be.
Funding
All courses are approved by ILA Scotland. ILA Scotland is a Scottish Government scheme that can help pay for the cost of learning. It’s for people who are 16 or over and living in Scotland. If your income is £22,000 a year or less, or you are on benefits, you can apply for a learner account from ILA Scotland that will give you up to £200 a year towards the cost of this course.
