Mental Health & Sensory Impairment Update & Invitation to Stakeholder Event

Over the course of the last year, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (NHSGGC) has striven to improve access to mental health services for people with sensory impairment. Our progress to date has primarily focused on improving the communication support needs for people who are Deaf, deafened or deafblind.

Our work has been greatly informed by the involvement and views of services users, carers and groups representing their interests. In particular, our stakeholder event held in September 2008, helped to stimulate discussion with service users and staff on the key issues and priorities, as well as offering an opportunity for engagement and involvement.

Among the many issues discussed at the event was the need for effective intervention at an early stage to prevent mental illness worsening and linked to that, the need to reach people who are experiencing barriers to our services. Many service users expressed a feeling of isolation and frustration when trying to access services.

Attached is a summary of some of the key themes from that event, together with an update of progress made over the last year.

We are very keen to ensure service users and carers continue to be involved in shaping our services. As such, we intend to hold a further stakeholder event and very much hope that you will be able to join us. The details for the event are set out below:-

9am – 12.30pm, Monday 1st March 2010 in Jury’s Inn (large conference room), Jamaica Street, Glasgow.

Lunch will be provided. Provision has also been made for BSL interpreters and a Notetaker. Please confirm your attendance, along with any special requirements you may need, to:-
