This information resource focuses on services provided by the HearOn team at Deaf Connections. However, many other services and facilities provided by other departments are available to hard of hearing people.
Ask for a copy of our information resource called 'Introducing Deaf Connections' to find out about our full range of services for all types of deaf people and for those working with or for them.
Some key services that may be of interest to hard of hearing people are outlined below.
Adult Literacy and Numeracy Service
Our Adult Literacy and Numeracy Service offers support to anyone wanting to improve their literacy and/or numeracy skills and knowledge. The service is free of charge and open to all D/deaf, and hard of hearing people living in and around Glasgow. Support can be on a 'one to one basis' or through group sessions. We help people achieve their own goals in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
We have a mix of tutors, some are Deaf, some hard of hearing and some are hearing. All are trained in literacy and numeracy provision and have a good understanding of the issues concerning Deaf and hard of hearing people.
We can help with many situations. Here are some examples of what we can assist you with.
- Study support for over 16s who are at school or college
- Writing letters and filling in forms
- Jargon busting for meetings and help with communication at work
- Planning your career development and help with the next steps
- Helping your kids with their homework
- Managing the household budget
- Understanding your finances and making the most of your money
- Creative writing
- Family history
- Making sense of computers, email and the internet

Healthy Living Centre
Deaf Connections is a Healthy Living Centre for Deaf people. The Healthy Living team provide a range of services and events designed to enable Deaf people to improve their general health and wellbeing.
Many of these services and events are accessible to hard of hearing people whose first language is English as well as BSL users.
For example, there are regular talks and workshops covering range of health related topics. Communication support is available for both Deaf and hard of hearing people at many of these.
A new Active Futures Sports Project has recently been started. See below for more information.
Active Futures Sports Project
Our Active Futures Sports Project is funded for three years by the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) and supported by Sport Council for Glasgow City Council Culture and Leisure Services and Deaf Connections and other partners including National Deaf Children's Society, Scottish Deaf Association and West of Scotland Deaf children's Society.
The project aims to help sports organisations, coaching course providers and sports facilities to become more accessible to deaf people of all ages. It also aims to increase the number of deaf people who are qualified sports coaches, leaders and volunteers.
One of the key outcomes of the project will be to improve the quality of life for young deaf people aged 17-24 in the Greater Glasgow area by increasing their participation in sports and physical recreation.
There are many ways in which we will achieve these aims. For example, taster; classes will be organised to encourage deaf people to try out new activities. Another example, is our family sports sessions at the Gorbals Leisure Centre which encourage young deaf people and their families to come and take part in a range of activities such as swimming, football, badminton, gym, Boccia, etc.
